Taylor Swift fans sure know how to move the earth. The big news last month was 2.3 magnitude earthquake during the Seattle leg of her The Eras Tour when the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (equivalent to our GeoNet network) registered significant seismic activity. All the raucous dancing, the music, the speakers, and the beat – all that energy was driven into the ground resulting in seismic tremors.

New Zealand has also seen its fair share of earthquake events resulting from enthusiastic fan activity. The last music concert known to have caused seismic activity was  during the 2011 Foo Fighters concert at Western Springs Stadium. Who said that Auckland doesn't experience earthquakes! Dave Grohl sure knows how to belt out a few songs.

Pop quiz? What was the other event that was picked up by GeoNet strong motion sensors?

Not that surprising but it was the Rugby World Cup final 23 October 2011 when the All Blacks beat France 8-7 to win the World Cup.
