Scientists estimate a 25% chance of a magnitude 8 quake (or larger) striking the southern section of the Hikurangi subduction zone (e.g. Wellington) within the next 50 years. An 8.9M Hikurangi earthquake scenario would release 45X more energy than the Kaikoura earthquake in 2016. Key message, if a quake is Long or Strong, Get Gone.
